Three decades of dedicated and valuable service to the peace initiatives aimed at ending serious and long-lasting conflicts in different parts of the world has earned former Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari this year's Nobel Peace Prize.
The five-member Nobel awards committee chose Ahtisaari from among 197 nominations, French-Colombian politician Ingrid Betancourt were also considered for the award.

10/1/2008 : Number of displaced in Colombia grows dramatically
The number of people displaced by violence in Colombia increased 41 percent the past six months. A total of 270,675 Colombians were forced to seek security elsewhere, the Consultancy for Human Rights and Displacement (Codhes) reported Tuesday.
