11/30/2006 : Paramilitary infiltration of state institutions undermines rule of law
In the last month, at least nine congressmen belonging to pro-government parties have been linked by the judicial authorities to army-backed paramilitary groups. Over the last few decades, paramilitary groups have been held responsible for some of the worst human rights atrocities committed in Colombia, including the killing of tens of thousands of civilians. This political scandal threatens to further undermine the rule of law in Colombia.
11/28/2006 : Colombian senator admits right-wing militia link
A pro-government senator revealed Sunday that he and dozens of other politicians, some of them now members of the government, signed a loyalty pledge in 2001 to right-wing paramilitary warlords.
11/21/2006 : Colombia arrests correspondent for Venezuelan news channel on terrorism charges
A reporter for news channel Telesur, majority controlled by the Venezuelan government of President Hugo Chavez, was arrested in Bogota on charges of terrorism and rebellion. The television channel was criticized by opponents of Chavez in Colombia even before its launch, with critics saying that it would tilt its coverage toward the country's leftist rebels and against the right-wing government of President Alvaro Uribe.

11/17/2006 : Landmines are hidden horror in rural Colombia
Home-made mines crafted from tin cans and containers, hidden in trees, rivers and buried on pathways, killed or wounded 1,100 people in Colombia last year, according to the Landmine Monitor. It was the highest figure of any country in the world.

Colombia's largest rebel group is calling on actor Denzel Washington and filmmakers Oliver Stone and Michael Moore to help it reach a deal with the government on exchanging imprisoned guerrillas for rebel-held hostages, including three U.S. citizens.
11/3/2006 : Colombian rebels kill 17 officers, a civilian
Just days after the government rejected peace talks, rebels attacked an isolated mountain hamlet in northern Colombia on Wednesday and killed 17 police officers and a civilian.
