The AGM of the International Federation of Ingrid Betancourt committees (FICIB) was held in Evry, near Paris on 10/11 April 08. Ingrid Betancourt's sister Astrid praised the ongoing campaign in the 69 Federation committees, 10 of which are located abroad (outside of France).
She recalled events since the last AGM including the freeing of seven hostages among them Clara Rojas. She mentioned that the recent visit by French Foreign Affairs Minister Bernard Kouchner had established links between the French President.Nicolas Sarkozy and President of Venezuela,Hugo Chavez.
The Venezuelan Ambassador to France, Jesus Arnaldo Pirez also told the AGM that President Chavez was "ready" to resume mediation with FARC but this had been "unfortunately" prevented by Alvaro Uribe.
Adair Lamprea, Ingrid Betancourt's former transport director of elections, who was with Ingrid when she was detained by FARC in 2002 spoke of his "pessimism". Ingrid had fought against corruption; there were people who would prefer to see her remain in the jungle. About 30 members of the Colombian parliament, among them associates of Uribe, have been detained recently for corruption.
The evening's debate was followed by a concert given by artists such as Adrienne Paul, Cecilem, Claudia Meyer and the Belgian group CasaNoe.
