Presidential candidate Horacio Serpa (Liberal Party) confirmed to Radio Caracol his decision to send his children abroad as a precautionary measure given the lack of security that increasingly affects his country.
He stated that although he has not received any direct threats, it is better to be "safe than sorry". His children Horacio José and Sandra are packing their bags while his daughter Rosita who is already abroad will remain there.
His wife Rosita, his wife, will stay with him. Serpa said the decision to send his family abroad had been taken after the recent kidnapping and murder of Liliana Gaviria, the sister of former President and Leader of the Liberal Party, Caesar Gaviria.
Horacio Serpa stated the country was experiencing a high level of insecurity that worried him. "It is difficult to run a campaign in these conditions. What happened to Liliana Gaviria confirms that there are serious risks and that threats are not just limited to the Presidential candidates but also threaten members of their families", the Liberal Party candidate said.
He added that even though he had received good support from the Bogotá police and that there was a 99% chance that nothing would happen, it was better not to allow the 1% chance affect his family in one way or another".
