Carlos Ayala Saavedra, 59, escaped from his captors in north-eastern Colombia and fled to Venezuela, where he was found safe on Sunday, an EU source told Reuters in Colombia.
The European Commission confirmed that Ayala, married with four children, was safe.
"We don't have lot of details about the circumstances of his release but we know that he is in good health," a Commission spokeswoman said in Brussels.
"He will be coming back to the Colombian delegation today."
The EU source declined to say who kidnapped Ayala but Colombian government sources said he was held by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), the country's largest leftist rebel group.
Ayala vanished in mid-April on a trip near Cucuta, the capital of Norte de Santander province, which borders Venezuela and is known for coca-growing and guerrilla violence.>Back
