In an interview with W Radio, Astrid Betancourt, sister of former presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt, stated that Rodrigo Granda - often called the “Chancellor of Farc”, is a vital member of the rebel group. That is why she hopes that Farc will see his release as a way of opening possibilities for a humanitarian exchange.
“Granda has never been designated by Farc as a spokesman for a humanitarian agreement, but he is a very important member of their organization, and he is someone who as far as I understand acted as a liaison officer with groups in Latin America who are sympathetic to Farc.”
Astrid Betancourt added that she continues to hope for a negotiation despite the response from Farc.
“I think that we must give Farc some time so they may make a reciprocal gesture following Granda’s release” said Astrid Betancourt.
Lazaro Viveros, the former peace Commissioner, who received the answer from Farc spokesman Raul Reyes, stated that Granda’s future role was unknown, giving his position as a rebel.
He stated that he did not know the origin of the suggestion made by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, in asking for Rodrigo Granda’s release; as far as he is concerned, Farc’s answer is only a political ploy.
