The guerrilla movement FARC recently sent a letter to the group known as‘Colombians for Peace’ in which they request a ‘Major National Peace Accord’ which will reject the military agreements signed with the United States. This letter comes soon after their denunciation in a recent press release of the use of Colombian military bases by the US army.
In their policy document FARC propose to ‘build an alternative political policy which will give priority to the establishment of peace, the setting up a dialogue, the drafting of a bilateral treaty and an immediate end once more the presence of North American troops on our territory’.
The letter which is directed, in addition, to various sectors of civil society, outlines the possibility that once the accords are finalised, a Constitutional National Assembly could be called which would authenticate any decisions taken. ‘We call on all patriots and democrats in Colombia to engage in this process to avoid the permanent establishment of a dictatorship or of a despotic and totalitarian government’ the statement continues.
In their press release published last Tuesday, FARC denounced as an ‘act of high treason to the country and an affront to national dignity’ the announcement of the use of five military bases by the US army. They add that the alliance between the two countries was establishing a foothold with a view to war, a war which would be conducted from Washington against various governments, countries and neighbouring populations.
