The leaders of Colombia and Venezuela will meet next Thursday to officially end their dispute over the capture of a top Colombian rebel on Venezuelan soil last month, the Colombian government said on Friday.

After the return of Christian Chesnot and Georges Malbrunot the tragedy of the hostages continues with the disappearance in Iraq of journalist, Florence Aubenas and her driver Hussein Hanoun al-Saadi. But another French woman is still held captive. The Armed Revolutionary Forces of Colombia (FARC) kidnapped Ingrid Betancourt on 23 February 2002, with her friend and director of elections Clara Rojas.

1/19/2005 : Paramilitaries disarm- Human Rights Watch condemns impunity deal
Nearly a thousand paramilitaries lay down their arms on Tuesday in Colombia. Much media attention has been given to this action but it has equally been criticised by Human Rights Watch (HRW) who condemn the dangers that go along with such an amnesty deal.
1/11/2005 : Paris seeks Florence Aubenas
French Prime Minister, Jean-Pierre Raffarin announced that the State is doing everything it can to find Florence Aubenas, the journalist from the daily Liberation newspaper, missing in Iraq since Wednesday ; Mr Raffarin also reiterated that the government is equally and totally determined to "obtain the freedom of Ingrid Betancourt" held by a guerrilla group in Colombia.
1/2/2005 : New Year 'massacre' in Colombia
Suspected left-wing rebels in Colombia killed 17 peasants at a party to celebrate New Year's Eve, police say. The attack took place in the province of Arauca, one of the country's most violent and remote areas, where left and right-wing groups fight for control of drug-smuggling corridors.
1/1/2005 : Colombia extradites rebel leader 'Trinidad'
Colombia's president authorised the extradition on Friday of Ricardo Palmera, alias "Simon Trinidad", after the Revolutionary Armed
Forces of Colombia, known by the Spanish initials FARC, failed to comply with an ultimatum to free 63 hostages including three Americans.
The FARC wants to swap its hostages -- who include soldiers, politicians and former presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt -- for 500 imprisoned rebels.
The three Americans being held are U.S. government contractors captured by the 17,000-member rebel army in February 2003 when their aircraft crashed during a mission to find illegal drug crops.
