Support evening for Ingrid Betancourt and Colombian hostages.

2/11/2006 - Le Soir

In Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium), the support concert for Ingrid Betancourt and Suu Kyi will be broadcast on the Internet.

On Monday 13 February a general appeal will be made to free Ingrid Betancourt, now facing a fifth year as a hostage of FARC in Colombia and Sung Sang Suu Kyi, Nobel peace Prizewinner, under house arrest by Burmese authorities. Both women have been made honorary citizens of the town and Aung Sang Suu Kyi has been given an honorary doctorate by UCL.

The events in support of both women have been organised by the town of Louvain-la-Neuve and UCL (Catholic University of Louvain) in collaboration with Amnesty International, the International Federation of Ingrid Betancourt Committees and Burma Action.

Amnesty International will organise a huge meeting at 13.00 in the main square. Participants are asked to bring white masks and yellow napkins. The masks symbolise all the absent hostages or prisoners; yellow is the colour of Aung Sang Suu Kyi's political party and is also one of the colour of the Colombian flag. A second level student, a primary school pupil, Astrid Betancourt, Ingrid's sister, and Aung Ko, the representative in France of the Burmese parliament in exile, will speak briefly to the gathering. Finally children from the primary school of Lauzelle will sing Renaud's song "In the Jungle" composed in honour of the Colombian hostage.

1700-1900 a meeting will be held in Biereau. Extracts from writings by Ingrid Betancourt will be read. Messages of support form people such as Jacqueline Aubenas, mother of Florence Aubenas, held hostage in Iraq, Fabienne Nerac, still awaiting news of her cameraman husband who is missing in Iraq and Astrid Betancourt, Ingrid's sister…. The hall can accommodate only 400 so come early.

20.00 - 23.00 : a concert will bring together such well-known artists as Renaud, Hugues Aufray and Calogero in the Aula Maxima. Adrien Jovenau will compere the evening made up of sol, duets and trios of singers as well as messages of support pre-recorded by The Darenne brothers, comics Marie Gillain, Emilie Dequenne, singers Yves Duteil, Yves Simon, Jeff Bodart, comedian Jean-Marie Petiniot, journalist Jean- Marie Cavada.

1200 tickets sold in two days.

There is no hope of getting a ticket for this concert. "1,200 seats were sold out in two days", says Thierry Couvreur, the organiser. A huge screen has been set up in the Hall allowing some 800 people to attend the concert. As well - and it's a first - the concert will be broadcast directly on the Internet thanks to co-operation from UCL (Catholic University of Louvain), VUB (University of Brussels) and Belnet, the national Belgian research networks.
