President Jacques Chirac spoke on Thursday evening 10 February with the Colombian President Alvaro Uribe to whom he conveyed his 'concern' about the fate of the French- Colombian Ingrid Betancourt, held hostage for three years by Marxist rebel group FARC.

2/7/2005 : Donors Set Conditions for Support for Paramilitary Disarmament

International donors meeting in Carthagena made greater support for the current paramilitary demobilisation process contingent on the passage of legislation that would ensure ”truth, justice and reparations” for the victims of human rights abuses.

The declaration urges ”the illegal armed groups (paramilitaries and leftist guerrillas) to cease attacks on the civilian population, the recruitment of minors and extortion, put an end to the production and trafficking of illegal drugs, and immediately release all hostages. It also underscores the possible benefits of a ”humanitarian accord” in keeping with international humanitarian law.

2/3/2005 : Uribe accused of delaying the liberation of Ingrid Betancourt

Juan Carlos Lecompte has issued statements that are very critical of the President of Colombia. The husband of Ingrid Betancourt, currently held by FARC, declared that the Colombian president had ordered the capture in Venezuela of a prominent member of the rebel group after having learned that he was taking steps with Switzerland to have Ingrid liberated.

2/3/2005 : Juan Carlos Lecompte at the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre

Human rights issues were central to the debates taking place in the capital of ant globalisation. The President of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez came to talk of "revolution" and South American unity.

Juan Carlos Lecompte, who is married to Ingrid Betancourt, currently held by rebels in Colombia, set up a stand at which two petitions were being signed; one addressed to President Alvaro Uribe, the other to the FARC in Colombia.

While Alain Lipietz was condemning the " unspeakable aggression of FARC" some metres away a militant of the Workers Party was applauding "the Colombian revolutionaries".

2/2/2005 : FARC leader Raul Reyes : Ingrid Betancourt is safe and sound

Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) leader, Raul Reyes denies that his organization has established camps and rebel bases in Venezuela.

The FARC hierarch admits that Rodrigo Granda did indeed attend the Bolivarian Congress of Peoples in Caracas as a FARC representative and that former Colombian presidential candidate, Ingrid Betancourt is safe and sound in FARC hands.
