"Peace is possible in Colombia," states Desmond Tutu, 1984 Nobel Prize Winner

2/10/2005 - El Tiempo

With these words Archbishop Tutu of South America began his speech at the International Symposium for the Return of Justice, in Cali.

The Nobel Prize winner arrived in Cali after a 13- hour journey. He shared his experiences as a leader in the movement for Justice and Reconciliation in South Africa.

According to him, the most important element in the search for a general agreement is to find conditions that can be accepted by all parties involved in the conflict. If such is not the case, he warned no progress could be made.

To get this agreement, continued Tutu, trust is needed and for that "there must be first agreement from all the Colombian people and then international recognition".

While the South African Archbishop chaired the discussion, outside in the courtyard of the Church of San Antonio, relatives of the 12 Parliamentary Deputies from La Vallée who are still held by FARC tried to deliver a letter to the Archbishop in which they asked him to negotiate to obtain a humanitarian agreement that would allow the hostages to be freed.

Carrying a cross displaying the names of the deputies and policemen from that region who are kidnapped, the families walked to seven churches in the capital of La Vallée completing a "Way of the Cross for Freedom"
