President of Congress invites FARC ;leaders to talk peace in the National Parliament

8/10/2006 - RCN Radio, Terra España

The president of the National Congress, the lady Senator from the Vallee County, Dilian Francisca Toro, has invited FARC leaders to peace talks in the Parliament, the headquarters of the Legislative power.

The Congress " is the place to talk peace" she stated, the day after having proposed to the Senate and the Chamber of Representatives the setting up of " suitable forums" to reach a national reconciliation and a humanitarian exchange.

"The doors of Parliament are open, "said the parliamentarian when she announced her proposal to transform Congress into a "place of dialogue and meetings for peace" on Monday last when Alvaro Uribe was sworn in a President for the period 2006 - 2010.

The Senator, leader of the Liberal party said she was in favour of negotiating " an end to violence"; she confirmed she had the backing of Parliament for peace talks between the Administration and the illegal armed groups.

"We as members of Congress represent the people", Toro declared and stated the doors of the National Assembly are open to FARC spokespersons.

In this Assembly, FARC leaders "can present their ideas and debate them like civilised people" the Senator explained.

On Monday last, Senator Toro announced her purpose was to "create a special legislative commission whose sole aim would be to find ways of reaching a humanitarian agreement", one that would be supported by both the Government and FARC thereby permitting the freeing of hostages held by the guerrilla.
