Children saved from destitution in Bogotá |
|
|
Perhaps you have heard of Yolanda Pulecio: Yolanda is the mother of Ingrid Betancourt, held hostage by Colombia rebels since 23 February 2002. But before her daughter became internationally known for her fight against corruption in her country and later because of her kidnapping by rebel forces, "Mama Yolanda", as her "kids" call her, was already a highly respected person in Colombia. "Mama Yolanda" is the mother of 12,000 children whom she has rescued from poverty in Bogotá… In 1958, when she had just been crowned Beauty Queen, Yolanda decided to use the monies won through the competition to rescue street children who had left home due to physical and psychological abuse: she founded l'Albergue Infantil (Hostels for Children) of Bogotá.
